Wat Phanan Choeng:
Wat Phanan Choeng is famous for its enormous seated Buddha image, considered to be one of the most beautiful in the country. According to legend tears shed from the eyes of the image just before the destruction of Ayutthaya by the Burmese in 1767.
The temple is located on the banks of the Pa Sak river opposite the South East tip of the historical island. From a riverboat, you will have great views of the monastery, that also has a boat landing.
The temple’s main attraction is its huge 19 meters tall Buddha image. The brick and mortar image named Phra Chao Phanan Choeng is seated in the posture of subduing Mara, otherwise known as Calling the Earth to witness.
Wat Phra Si Sanphet:
This monastery was the most important temple of
Ayutthaya and situated within the Grand Palace grounds. It served as a model for the
Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok.
Upon finalization of the palace in 1351, the King established Ayutthaya as his capital
and was bestowed the title of King Ramathibodi I. The original size of the old palace
compound is believed to be the same as the area of Wat Phra Sri Sanphet today.
Wat Mongkhon Bophit:
Phra Mongkhon Bophit or the Buddha of the Holy and Supremely Auspicious
Reverence was sculpted in 1538 in the reign of King Chairacha (r. 1534-1547) at Wat
Chi Chiang Sai. 1538 is generally accepted as the year that the image was built, based
on the Luang Prasoet version of the Royal Chronicles of Ayutthaya.
The main feature at Wat Mongkhon Bophit is the large bronze (gilded) Buddha image, named Phra Mongkhon Bophit, which is close to 17 meters high (when including the 4,5 meters high base).
Wat Mahathat:
Wat Mahathat (Temple of the Great Relics) is located almost right in the center of Ayutthaya. Apart from being the symbolic center where the Buddha's relics were enshrined, Wat Mahathat was also the residence of the Supreme Patriarch or leader of the Thai Buddhist monks.
Also the house of Buddha's head, embedded into a tree trunk.
Wat Yai Chai Mongkol:
Wat Phra Chao Phya-Thai popularly is known as Wat Yai Chaimongkol. The large chedi there can be seen from a great distance.
It was built by King U-thong in 1357 A.D. for the use of the monks who had returned from Ceylon after studying under Phra Vanarat Maha Thera. This body of monks was known as the Pa Kaeo Sect. So this monastery was originally known as Wat Pa Kaeo.
